The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) requires a toilet to pass four basic tests. TOTO has not only proven itself in these tests, they put their products through six additional tests that go above and beyond the government imposed standards.

TOTO toilets come equipped with an oversized 3" flush valve as compared to an industry standard 2" flush valve. This oversized flush valve results in a quick and powerful flush, delivering the same volume of water to the toilet bowl in less than 1/2 the time of a conventional toilet.
To match this increased water flow into the toilet bowl, TOTO toilets incorporate a large 2 1/8" trapway as compared to an industry standard of 1 1/2", providing twice the flow leaving the toilet bowl.

In 1987, 1.6 gallon-per-flush (GPF) legislation was passed in Massachusetts, giving manufacturers two years to comply. Most manufacturers simply reduced the size of their tanks, which resulted in poor performance and multiple flushes.
